Break of Structure (BOS) is one of the most important concepts in price action trading Gold, especially in Smart Money Concepts (SMC) and ICT trading styles.
Today, I will explain what break of structure, why it happens, and why it matters in Gold XAUUSD trading.
Market Structure Basics
In price action trading, market structure is built by swing highs and swing lows.
Bullish Structure
Bullish Structure equals Higher High + Higher Low.

In a bullish structure, a break through the last Higher High is an important event that is called Bullish Break of Structure BoS.

Bullish break of structure confirms that the market continues or establishes an uptrend and creates a new bullish market structure.

That's the example of a bullish structure and BoS on Gold 1 minute chart.
As you can see, the market established a bullish trend after a confirmed bullish break of structure
Bearish Structure
Bearish Structure = Lower High + Lower Low

In a bearish structure, a break through the last Lower Low is an important event that is called Bearish Break of Structure.

Bearish break of structure confirms that the market continues or establishes a downtrend and creates a new bearish market structure.

As you can see, Gold established a downtrend on a daily time frame with a confirmed bearish Break of Structure BoS below the level of the previous Lower Low, setting a new Lower Low Lower Close.
It indicates that the market will likely continue falling.
BoS Event
In other words, a Break of Structure is the moment the gold price decisively breaks the last major swing point in the direction of the trend.
Why BOS is So Important?
It confirms the trend strength.
A BOS tells you the trend is still alive and healthy.
Without BOS, the trend is weak or potentially reversing.
When BOS fails, it may signify a potential trend reversal.

Check the Gold chart above.
Initially, the market was strongly bearish, and a bearish BoS confirmed a downtrend continuation.
The price failed to deliver another bearish BoS then.
It was a clear signal of the weakness of the sellers.
The trend reversed then and turned bullish.
It helps identify high-probability entries.
Many trend-following Gold trading strategies are based on Break of Structure + pullback for entries.

Above is a great example of combining break of structure and pullbacks in an uptrend for spotting strong trend-following signals and entries on Gold.
BoS Trading Tips
And here are some tips that will help you use BoS more effectively.
Higher Timeframe BOS is much stronger.
Remember that break of structure may occur on any time frame.
Lower time frame break of structures are less significant than higher time frames ones.
For example, a bearish break of structure on a daily time frame will have a way stronger impact on Gold than a bullish break of structure on 1 minute time frame.
Always wait for candlestick close beyond the structure level to confirm BOS.
Remember that candle wicks beyond the structure do not confirm trend continuation.

Above, Gold failed to break and close above the last Higher High, delivering invalid BoS.
It confirmed a weakness of a bullish trend, and a bearish reversal followed.
Summary
Break of Structure BoS means that the trend is still strong. Keep trading Gold in this direction.
It’s one of the essential price action tools for understanding market sentiment and building a clear directional bias on any time frame on XAUUSD.
